A Book I’m Reading – Leading Things You Didn’t Start

Tyler Reagin is a great guy with incredible insights. Most leaders will inherit the church or organization they’ll lead. It is inspiriting to hear about start-ups, but I think it’s equally inspiring to learn of leaders who build on the past and envision a brighter future.

From Amazon:

Sure, it’s inspirational when we hear stories about those who founded companies from their garages with one hundred dollars cash while in high school. But such success is super rare and not always how it plays out for great leaders.

The reality is that most leaders are responsible for corporations, teams, and products they didn’t launch from the ground up. Tyler Reagin saw the immense need to address this mission-critical but often overlooked aspect of leadership: healthy transition for leaders who inherit teams, places, or platforms others created.

His groundbreaking book Leading Things You Didn’t Start provides a faith-based four-step plan that answers practical questions such as:

• Do I really want to take over something loved by so many?
• Is there a secret sauce to doing what the leaders before me did?
• How do I get the current team on board with my leadership?
• How do I honor the past without being trapped by it?
• How do I steward the legacy of the leaders who started the movement?

Through the use of tried-and-true coaching principles and practical case studies with leaders like Buzz Williams, head coach at Texas A&M, and Cheryl Bachelder, former CEO of Popeyes, Reagin helps you maximize your newfound influx of influence and master the intentions of an inheriting leader.

An App worth Mentioning Again (& Again) – Goodnotes

I mention this app almost every year … it is so good! Goodnotes is the app that helps me leave paper behind, stay organized, and keep my important documents at hand. I use this app every day for reading and notetaking.

A Quote from I’m Thinking About

As a leader, you have to fight to master the basic in order to create the great.” – Tyler Reagin

An Insightful Book – Seeing Jesus from The East

Ravi Zacharias is a well known author and Bible teacher. I confess that I haven’t read much of his work. With his recent passing, I picked this book up and I’m drawn in. I have been intrigued by seeing the world through an eastern perspective.

    From Amazon:

Encounter Jesus Like Never Before through Eastern Eyes

Throughout these pages, Ravi Zacharias and Abdu Murray invite readers to rediscover the cultural insights we often miss when we ignore the Eastern context of the Bible. They offer a refreshing picture of Jesus, one that appeals to Eastern readers and can penetrate the hearts and imaginations of postmodern Westerners.

In Seeing Jesus from the East, Ravi Zacharias and Abdu Murray show us why a broader view of Jesus is needed – one that recognizes the uniquely Eastern ways of thinking and communicating found in the pages of the Bible. Zacharias and Murray capture a revitalized gospel message, presenting it through this Eastern lens and revealing its power afresh to Western hearts and minds.

Incorporating story, vivid imagery, and the concepts of honor and shame, sacrifice, and rewards, Seeing Jesus from the East calls believers and skeptics, both Eastern and Western, to a fresh encounter with the living and boundless Jesus.

A “Healthy” Soda – Orange Zevia

Zevia makes several zero-calorie sodas that are naturally sweetened with stevia, which is far healthier than normal sweeteners. Their orange-flavored soda is one of my favorites. I tend to pick the flavors that do not contain caffeine. While these sodas might take some getting used to at first, I have found them a good go-to when I need some fizz.

A Productivity Podcast – The Productivity Show by Asian Efficiency

I am a productivity junkie. I am drawn to podcasts, books, apps, etc. that can help me become more focused and productive. The Productivity Show podcast continually offers great insights. Today’s episode is a Q&A format that is full of tidbits.

A Book About Dogs and Leadership – Be the Pack Leader

Laura’s uncle has told me a lot about Cesar Millan’s show. Some of the techniques he’s told me about sound interesting. When I heard Cesar has a book about leadership, I picked it up. It is full of interesting stories with broad leadership applications.

      From Amazon:

Bestselling author Cesar Millan takes his principles of dog psychology a step further, showing you how to develop the calm-assertive energy of a successful pack leader and use it to improve your dog’s life–and your own.
