A Great Podcast Episode – The Power of a Grateful No

Greg McKeown is a powerful writer and a wonderful podcast host. His book Essentialism is a game changer.

I listened to his latest podcast episode today on the way to the office — The Power of a Grateful No. If you’ve ever struggled with making or keeping boundaries, I’d encourage you to listen to this episode.

A Podcast I’d Love for You to Subscribe To – The Weekday Podcast

The Weekday Podcast is designed to encourage you as your start your day. My friend, Chuck Allen, and I post these 5-minute episodes 5 days a week. I’d be honored if you’d subscribe to them and share them with friends.

A Bible I Love – Allan Bibles

I’ve owned a lot of Bibles over the years. I tend to use different sizes or styles for different purposes (preaching, studying, general reading, travel, etc.). I recently bit the bullet and purchased what many would call a premium Bible. There are several publishers that are well known for really high quality Bible bindings — I may mention others in the weeks to come. But my favorite so far is the Allan NIV Classic Reference Edition NIV1.

This particular NIV is bound with black goatskin, with a full yapp cover which protects the pages. It feels incredible!

I have not regularly used the NIV since my youth group days. It has been a nice change in recent months. The NIV is the most widely used English language modern translation. It aims for an all-round balance between formality and informality in its rendering of the orginal languages of the Bible.

Here’s a bit about Allan Bibles: Since 1863, R.L. Allan & Son Publishers have been producing and selling our own exclusive Allan range of high quality, hand-finished leather Bibles – Bibles which are both beautiful and durable. They are perhaps the finest leather-bound Bibles you can buy.

A Quote from I’m Thinking About

You don’t have to be positive all the time. It’s perfectly okay to feel sad, angry, annoyed, frustrated, scared and anxious. Having feelings doesn’t make you a negative person. It makes you human.”

A Book I’m Reading – Likability

I’m a big fan of Dr. Rick Forbus‘ work. He’s helped me and our team develop and grow in significant ways thru coaching and training. His latest book has to do with the secret sauce to leadership influence. I just started it and can already tell it’s going to be really helpful.

From Amazon:

Influence is the difference between mediocre and great leaders!
Likability is the “secret” that drives leadership influence to its highest potential.

  • Grow in your likability.
  • Grow in your influence.
  • Grow in your leadership.

This book tells you how to be likable and goes in depth to put forward how to develop your organization’s greatest asset; its talent force.

A Lesson I’m Learning

One of our jobs is to manage the way people perceive us. We all “show up” in certain ways. Some days, I’m energetic. Some days I’m focused. Some days I’m drained or not feeling well. No matter the circumstance, I still need to be aware of how I’m showing up to others. And, as best I can, show up as my best self. If there is something that is keeping me from showing up how I want to, I need to be willing to explain it to the people I’m with. Or else, they will likely misinterpret what they are seeing.

It reminds me of the questions Jeff Henderson asks: What’s it like to be on the other side of me?

A New Podcast I’m Digging: The Positive Talk Podcast

My friends Chuck Allen and Julie Homrich have a fantastic new podcast out called The Positive Talk Podcast. They release new episodes every Thursday — definitely worth subscribing to!

A Quote from I’m Thinking About

It does not matter how strong and well prepared you are if you have no direction.” — Yulia Peralta

A Book I’m Reading – The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry

John Mark Comer wrote an incredible book that provides a path toward emotional and spiritual health. I previously recommended the podcast built around the same concepts last year. If you didn’t check out the book then, I’d highly recommend checking it out now.

From Amazon:

“Who am I becoming?”

That was the question nagging pastor and author John Mark Comer. Outwardly, he appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren’t pretty. So he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words:

“Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life.”

It wasn’t the response he expected, but it was—and continues to be—the answer he needs. Too often we treat the symptoms of toxicity in our modern world instead of trying to pinpoint the cause. A growing number of voices are pointing at hurry, or busyness, as a root of much evil.

Within the pages of this book, you’ll find a fascinating roadmap to staying emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world.

A Fascinating Conversation About What Happens in our Brains When We Engage in Spiritual Practices

Pastor Chuck Allen and Julie Homrich, LPC sat down Sunday to talk about the integration of faith and counseling. In particular, they talked about what’s happening in our brains when we engage in spiritual practices. They introduced me to a new concept – Neurotheology.

A Mindfulness App Built on Scripture – Soulspace

Chuck Allen introduced this app to me a few days ago. It is a meditation app that is built on scripture. If you use the link above, you’ll receive a free month of their premium offering.

I have made it a habit to spend about 10 minutes a day in mindfulness at least 5 days a week. These relatively few minutes have a fantastic return on investment: lower stress, clearer thinking, & better sleep to name a few.

Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life.” – Dallas Willard
